Reduce Mosquitoes in Huntsville with the “Bucket of Doom”

With mosquitoes already appearing earlier than expected this year, Huntsville residents have an opportunity to take a simple and effective step to reduce mosquito populations across town.

Local resident Jake Songer introduced us to a method called the “Bucket of Doom.” This approach targets mosquitoes at the larval stage—before they become the biting nuisance we all deal with during the summer.

How It Works

The “Bucket of Doom” is a simple setup using:

• A 5 gallon bucket

• Water

• A handful of grass clippings or organic debris

• A mosquito dunk (BTI)

Mosquitoes are naturally attracted to stagnant, nutrient-rich water. They lay their eggs in the bucket, and the mosquito dunk releases a naturally occurring bacteria (BTI) that eliminates the larvae before they hatch.

An added benefit is that mosquitoes can carry small amounts of the BTI spores to other nearby breeding areas, helping extend the impact beyond your yard.

Why This Matters

Even a few buckets per property can make a noticeable difference.

If a small percentage of households participate, we can significantly reduce mosquito populations across Huntsville.

This method...

• Targets mosquitoes before they become airborne

• Avoids chemical spraying

• Is safe for pets, wildlife, and plants

• Is inexpensive and easy to maintain

Get Started

The Town of Huntsville will provide mosquito dunks free of charge at Town Hall, along with printed instructions on how to build your bucket. Visit the office Monday and Wednesdays (9-1pm) to pick up your FREE dunks.

We encourage residents to place a few buckets around their property, especially in shaded areas.

If you would prefer to purchase your own mosquito dunks, they are available here:

Simple Setup Instructions

1. Fill a 5 gallon bucket about 3/4 full with water

2. Add a handful of grass clippings or organic material

3. Place one mosquito dunk in the bucket

4. Add a small stick so wildlife can climb out if needed

5. Place the bucket in a shaded area

6. Check occasionally and add water as needed

Work Together, Make a Difference

This is a simple, community driven solution that works best when many households participate.

With just a small effort from each of us, we can make a meaningful impact and keep Huntsville more comfortable this summer.
