The Huntsville Town Water System
BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING
What happened?
December 12, 2024, The Huntsville Town Water System has had a loss of pressure in the
distribution system due to a significant leak in the supply side of their system between their
water treatment plant and their million-gallon storage tank. At 2 pm on December 13th the water
line to the town was shut off for several hours. This led to a decrease of pressure in the
distribution system, which may have caused backsiphonage, or possibly a net movement of
water from outside to the inside of the system pipe through cracks, breaks, or joints in the
distribution system that are common in all water systems. Such a system malfunction carries
with it a potential that fecal contamination or other disease-causing organisms could enter the
distribution system.
What is being done?
Huntsville Town Water system has been diligently working to find the leak for several days and
have yet to find it. Once the leak is found and repaired, they will continue to fill the storage tank,
increase chlorine residuals to kill any organisms that might have been introduced, and
thoroughly flush the distribution system. Once they have obtained noticeable chlorine residuals
throughout the system, they will collect investigative samples to verify there is no contamination
in the system.
What should the consumer do?
● DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil,
let it boil for (3) minutes, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or
bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes,
and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in
the water. ALL STORED WATER, DRINK OR ICE MADE RECENTLY FROM THIS
SUPPLY SHALL BE DISCARDED.
● Inadequately treated water may contain disease-causing organisms. These organisms
include bacteria, viruses, and parasites which can cause symptoms such as diarrhea,
cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk
for infants, young children, some of the elderly and people with severely compromised
immune systems.
● The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you
experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical
advice. People at increased risk should seek advice about drinking water from their
health care providers.
The Huntsville Town Water System will inform you when you no longer need to boil your water.
General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the
EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1(800) 426-4791 Division website: drinkingwater.utah.gov.
