Huntsville America 250 Adopt-a-Hydrant Program
Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday Through Community Art
Program Overview
The Town of Huntsville invites residents, families, businesses, scout troops, churches, schools, and community groups to participate in the Huntsville America 250 Adopt-a-Hydrant Program. Participants will help transform fire hydrants throughout town into patriotic works of art celebrating America’s 250th birthday.
Program Timeline
• Program Kickoff & Registration: May 2026 • Hydrant Assignments & Paint Checkout: Late May 2026 at Huntsville Town Hall during normal business hours (Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM), or by appointment. We ask that materials be checked out for two weeks or less so others are able to use the kits. • Painting Period: June 1 – June 30, 2026 • Final Touch-Ups & Photography: July 1 – July 2, 2026 • Judging: July 2, 2026 • Awards Presentation: July 4, 2026 during the patriotic celebration program
Program Goals
• Celebrate America 250 • Beautify Huntsville with patriotic public art • Encourage family and community participation • Create a fun walking tour throughout town • Build a memorable community tradition
Approved Theme
All designs should reflect patriotic Americana themes using traditional red, white, blue, and complementary accent colors. Examples include stars and stripes, historical Americana, military tributes, eagles, fireworks, vintage patriotic themes, small-town America, and historic Huntsville-inspired artwork.
Paint & Materials
The Town of Huntsville will provide approved paint and basic supplies through a community checkout system. Participants will check out paint and supplies, then return
unused materials so they may be reused by others. Paint will be provided, and only Town-issued Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore paint may be used. Recommended Paint Options: • Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial Waterbased Industrial Enamel • SW 4081 Safety Red • Extra White • SW 4086 Safety Blue • Benjamin Moore Corotech High Performance Enamel or Aura Exterior • Heritage Red • Chantilly Lace • Patriot Blue Optional accent colors may also be available.
Fire Hydrant Safety Rules
• Hydrants must remain fully functional at all times • Do not paint nozzle caps, threads, operating nuts, or reflective markers • Do not block emergency access or visibility • Use drop cloths and keep paint off sidewalks and streets • Children must be supervised by adults • Artwork must remain family friendly and respectful
Design Approval
Participants should submit: • Name or group name • Contact information • Preferred hydrant location — preference may be given to those adopting hydrants near their home or neighborhood • Simple sketch or design description The Town reserves the right to approve or request modifications to any design.

Community Partners
The Town hopes to partner with local artists, retired art teachers, and community arts organizations to help coordinate and mentor participants throughout the project.
